The Health Benefits Of Spices Go Beyond Flavor

Modern food is regularly enhanced by the addition of natural flavorings found in the berries, seeds, roots, twigs, and dried bark of many differing plant families. Besides having become an integral part of modern cooking, the health benefits of spices provide additional protection against a wide variety of harmful human physical conditions.

They differ from herbs because no actual plant leaves are used in their creation. Some help fight against molecular damage caused by the creation of free radical compounds, which may be produced when someone is exposed to environmental poisons such as tobacco smoke, common air pollution, or as a reaction to the introduction of bacteria.

These destructive cellular modifications are often warded off by antioxidants, which seek to undo the damage. People discovered years ago that some plants naturally produce large amounts of these chemicals, and their physical advantages include improved overall cardiovascular response, lowered blood sugar and inflammation, and better circulation.

After the period of European exploration began, regular trade made these flavorings more commonly accessible. Not only did these products help improve the taste and extend the shelf-life of foods, but they were also used to combat symptoms of stroke or coronary problems. Chili peppers were found to open clogged nasal passages, ward off some cancers and even improve basic memory function.

Ever-popular cinnamon fights high levels of cholesterol and elevated blood sugar, helps combat bacterial invasion, and acts as a sedative. Savory garlic has anti-fungal and bacterial characteristics, and also helps maintain healthy blood pressure readings. The tang of mustard eases the pain of arthritis and soothes sore throats.

The health benefits of spices make them more than just a another part of the human diet. They are a viable substitute for excess salt usage, which contributes to high blood pressure under some circumstances. Their additional flavors can even discourage overeating, an unanticipated but welcome factor in an age of widespread obesity.
