Ginger tea is one of the most popular herbal beverages in Asia in countries such as India and China. It's also getting more and more popular in other countries all over the world. Many people consume it not for its flavor, but for its numerous health benefits. In this article I want to share with you five most important benefits of drinking ginger tea.

1. Helps get rid of nausea

Numerous studies show that ginger tea is very beneficial for people who suffer from nausea caused by seasickness, morning sickness (although it isn't known if ginger tea is safe for pregnant womens) and possibly chemotherapy (there's contradictory evidence).

Drinking ginger tea may be also beneficial before a planned surgery because it may reduce nausea and vomiting which appear in some people during the first 24 hours after surgery. Ginger also reduces the symptoms of dizziness.

2. Beneficial for osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis

Some studies suggest that drinking ginger tea may help reduce inflammation of the joints (because of gingerols which provide anti-inflammatory properties) and improve one's mobility. Consequently, it may be beneficial for individuals who suffer from painful osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

3. Reduces muscle pain associated with exercise

Drinking ginger tea may be helpful for bodybuilders, athletes and fitness enthusiasts as well as people who want to lose weight. Why is that so? A study by scientists from the Department of Kinesiology, Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia) shows that eating two grams of ginger a day reduces post-workout muscle pain by noticeable 25%.

4. Lowers blood sugar and cholesterol levels

Iranian research shows that taking ginger may be beneficial for people who have high cholesterol levels (because it has a significant lipid lowering effect when compared to placebo). Moreover, animal research suggests that gingerols found in ginger may be also effective in inhibiting enzymes that promote insulin resistance.

5. May reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Animal research shows that ginger may reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer and/or slow the metastasis of a nonoperable tumor. Keep in mind that animal research don't necessarily say that ginger is also beneficial for treating cancer in humans.

What about side effects of ginger tea? You shouldn't consume it during pregnancy (we still don't know if it's safe). Ginger tea may also interact with some drugs: medications that slow blood clotting, drugs for diabetes and high blood pressure. However, in most cases ginger tea is generally safe and you probably can safely drink it on a regular basis.
