You can't achieve the benefits of exercising if you don't have sufficient amount of nutrition in your body. Metabolism (catabolism) rate is increased when you exercise, causing you to burn up a lot of calories. This means that energy levels are decreased and therefore proper nutrition must replace them immediately.

Breakdown of carbohydrates and fats increases every time you exercise. They must all be replaced, and in cases like building the muscles, sufficient amino acid sources are required to be ingested so that the new rate of muscle building will be started off by the exercise.

The demands of the body can tremendously increase, so you'll need sufficient amount of energy from carbohydrates to help the level of metabolism going on. Amino acids are supplied by food that are rich in protein, and these are essential to muscle building. You will also need extra quantities of micronutrients such as vitamins B and chromium, vitamins C and E which are great antioxidants, as well as minerals like calcium and magnesium. Free radicals are released even more by the level of metabolism, so anti-oxidants would need mop up action.

Drinking more water than you would usually do is one tactic you need to do. You sweat a lot when you exercise, and the loss of fluids could lead to dehydration.
