Stress can affect your physical and mental health, leaving you susceptible to depression, colds and possibly even cancer. And if you are working at a job that involves tight deadlines, long working hours, quick decision-making, keeping you constantly on your feet, you end up taking this stress to your home as well. Some of the signs that your high-stress job is affecting your health include tiredness, drowsiness, lack of energy, problems in staying focused, body aches, and heaviness in the head.

Taking breaks (especially for several days or weeks) is the best way to start relaxing your body and mind. Meditation, relaxation and taking a holiday allows the body and mind to recuperate allowing you to get back to work with more energy and concentration. Eating properly is essential during these times, too. Getting the right nutrition will help your body recover more quickly.

Constant stress decreases mineral and vitamin absorption, and often a balanced diet can't compensate for this. This reduces your energy. It can also diminish your body's immune response, making you more prone to recurring illness.

This is where supplements may indeed be quite helpful for you. Consider kava, for example. Kava is a beverage made from the root of a shrub called the pepper plant, Piper methysticum. The kava root, when grounded is brownish in color, and it is mixed with water and then drank as a beverage. In the form of supplements, the extract from the root is taken and placed in capsules. These are very effective for combating stress in healthy adults.

Another very popular herbal supplement for relieving stress and depression is St. John's wort. St John's Wort tablets are known to elevate levels of the neurotransmitter, serotonin, in the brain, thus alleviating symptoms such as sleeplessness, anxiety, stress, and depression.

A very good vitamin supplement should include the B vitamins since it plays an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system and metabolism. Vitamin B complex tablets have been found to restore the adrenal glands from stress. Adrenal glands produce adrenaline and cortisol. Any disturbances in their production can lead to imbalances in the blood sugar levels, leaving you feeling tired and low in energy. Vitamin B5, especially is quite helpful here since it restores the functioning of the adrenal glands.
