Pain killers in various forms have been around for thousands of years. They date back to the ancient empires where physicians would use opiate mixtures and herbal drafts to dull the pain of ancient surgeries and illnesses. These old recipes were not always reliable, but luckily modern medicine has refined anesthesia services into a beneficial industry that saves millions of people.

The earliest recorded pain medications are known to have been used in ancient Rome where physicians used milk of the poppy flower and mandrake root to alleviate the discomfort of illnesses or surgeries. The ancient Greek translation of the word anesthesia literally means 'without sensation'. It was named thus because that is precisely what it was designed to do.

Modern practices are used to control pain with the use of medicines called anesthetics. These medicines do not just ease pain, they also help regulate the body's systems. Successful practitioners will be able to control the heart rate, heart rhythm, breathing, blood flow, and pressure of a patient. This helps the body from going into shock or any other emergency state, thus raising the likelihood of a successful surgery.

There are aspects that can effect the process of anesthesia. These glitches come in the form of the patient's body and its various ailments. Heart disease, allergies, diabetes, kidney and liver damage can play a negative role in the application of certain drugs. Anesthesiologists need to know these health concerns in order to apply the proper dosage and monitor the patient's functions.

Anesthetics come in a few different forms and are used to relax patients while simultaneously blocking their pain and keeping them unconscious during deep surgeries. Every individual requires consideration to their age, weight, and health in order to calculate the proper dosage for a certain amount of time. Patients have often reported forgetting parts of their day after they've had anesthesia.

There are three main types of anesthetics with two subgroups. The first, and most regularly used is local anesthetic. Local numbing is applied during small procedures such as for regular dental work and stitches. The medicine is directly applied to the area that is going to be worked on and works to block the sensory receptors in that region.

Regional anesthesia has two categories of anesthetics grouped under it. When regional numbing occurs it is usually in a large region of the body such as a leg or the torso. The first subgroup of this type of anesthetic is peripheral and it deals with blocking the nerve receptors in a certain area of the body. Pregnant women of the last quarter century know the second sub group well. The epidural form of anesthetic is a needle that is injected into the spine so that the lower abdomen, lumbar spine, and the hips are numbed.

The last and most serious is general anesthesia. It is fed to the body intravenously and can be quite dangerous. General numbing induces sleep and lowered heart rate. Anesthesiologists who are not watchful or careful can lose patients during a procedure. Most anesthesia services are contracted from outside the hospital, surgeon, or doctor's practice. Independent anesthetic groups specialize in the field and are liable to mistakes. It is important to do research and disclose health information to these individuals in order to receive the best care.
