Blueberries have been around for a long time whetting the palate of generations of people. If you have never taken the time to indulge in this fruit, you are doing yourself a terrible injustice. Growing in the wild, the blueberry is small with a flavor all of its own. Some liken it to the taste of wine.

Today, most of them are cultivated in beds and can be found worldwide although they originated in North America. The cultivated berry is much larger than those that grow in the wild and its flavor is different without losing any of its succulence.

Reference is often made to the blueberry being the miracle fruit. It comes by this name quite honestly being high in nutrients but having no fat, sodium, or cholesterol to speak of. It is naturally high in protein and fiber and is loaded with antioxidants that fight off cancer, stress, bad eyesight, and urinary infections to name but a few. Other fruits and even spinach cannot come close to these bragging rights.

This fruit grows in clumps right on the vine. It must be picked at just the right time because it does not continue to ripen once its taken off the vine. Following the weather patterns throughout North America, it is planted at different times so the fruit is available year round. They can be purchased frozen but why pass up that fresh from the vine flavor?

Recipes that call for blueberries are numerous. From coffee cake, to cookies, to pies, and muffins, there is no recipe calling for fruit where you cannot substitute this berry in its place. Some people enjoy them dried and they can be reconstituted for baking. Bought fresh they will keep in the refrigerator for up to two weeks but it is hard to imagine them lasting that long.

A delight to look at and eat, this little berry can raise havoc in one instance. It is a great stain maker and most often is permanent once the deep blue color has seeped into cloth. It will stain the skin taking weeks for it to wear off at times. If you have berries to clean, wear an apron and rubber gloves on your hands.

When you are in the mood for a snack that is satisfying and filling, the low calories in blueberries fit the bill. For the best ones there are look for the fruit that has a firm feel and plump look. You can never buy too many because these beauties can be frozen with no fuss or muss. Simply place them in a covered container and pop them into the freezer. Take them out as needed and prepare them with your favorite recipe or drink.
