How To Recognize Verbal Abuse Signs

For someone who is trapped in a relationship in which she or he is being verbally abused, the effects can be just as harmful as those from physical abuse. Words can wound people and leave deep scars on their psyche and self-esteem if they are not stopped. Knowing what the verbal abuse signs are is a good idea so one can recognize such a situation if confronted with it.

If someone feels compelled to hurt another emotionally and verbally, there is a good chance that they suffer from a very low opinion of themselves. Being cruel, critical, and manipulative towards others is a desperate attempt at feeling as though they are superior. They will most often try to fully control the other person, and there are other ways this problem manifests as well.

Criticizing, calling the other person names, and ridiculing the opinion and emotions of the victim is the most typical behavior seen. Sometimes they will humiliate the person in front of people, but usually it happens when they are alone, as most abusers will put on a 'nice' face to everyone else. Eventually the abused may start to shut down, and fear expressing themselves as they know they will be ridiculed by the abuser.

The abuser will often continually attempt to make the other person feel responsible for everything. This blame reassignment manifested in the twisting of situations and words around to make the abused feel as though they are to blame. Making the other person feel guilty for not giving the abuser his or her way is another tactic used.

As their aim is to control the other's life, abusive people will frequently isolate them from family and friends. Jealousy plays a role in this too, as they usually don't like to share the person's time and affection with others. They may make threats and demands that keep the person away from others and under their control.

Being able to quickly spot the verbal abuse signs is vital to escaping the potential harm this situation presents. Most people agree that in such a relationship the best thing to do is to get out sooner rather than later. It is also possible to help others in this predicament if one knows what to watch out for.
